For thousands of years, the Chinese practice of acupuncture has been used as a method to alleviate a plethora of bodily ailments. Aches of all types, anxiety, and nausea can all be relieved from using this ancient Chinese procedure.
How does acupuncture work?
Using acupuncture has been shown to improve the functions in the body while also benefiting the natural healing process the body can provide when provoked. Needles are used to stimulate anatomic points in the body known as acupoints, which can treat health conditions and positively affect the body, mind, and soul.
How does acupuncture work for addiction recovery?
Rehabilitation facilities have used acupuncture as part of their holistic therapy model for many years even when the method was not completely understood by everyone in the public. What acupuncture was found to do was allow relief from the symptoms of withdrawal, stress, and anxiety brought about by trying to get sober which can be a difficult time for so many who struggle with addiction from drugs and alcohol. Acupuncture has proved to soothe the body, mind, and soul. For a person battling their demons with substance abuse, they can manifest hope with acupuncture and begin to feel better during this exasperating period in their life.
How is acupuncture administered for addiction recovery?
Needles are specifically used for addiction recovery when they are administered in the ear during a procedure called, auricular acupuncture, or more commonly known now as, Acudetox. The process is meant to particularly help with withdrawal symptoms including nausea, anxiety, and cravings.
According to the protocol of the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA), “NADA involves the gentle placement of up to five small, sterilized disposable needles into specific sites on each ear. The recipients sit quietly in a group setting for 30-45 minutes allowing the treatment to take effect. NADA ear acupuncture is an adjunct therapy that is clinically effective, cost-efficient, drug-free and compatible cross-culturally. It can easily be established within behavioral health, addictions or disaster relief settings or in any location that a group of people can sit together.
The combined application of acupuncture with counseling, education, medical support and self-help groups such as AA and NA enhance opportunities for success.”
